The Sierra Designs Womens Microlight Jacket boasts a no-frills design. No bulky seam taping, no heavy insulationnothing you dont absolutely need for windy, drizzly days. Its polyester taffeta fabric is light as a whisper and super breathable, and its PU coating protects you from mildly crappy weather. Cram this featherweight jacket in its included stuff sack and drop it in your daypack just in case the sky starts leaking or the wind picks up.
PROS: This jacket is great for the lightweight summer backpacker! I love that it is lightweight & makes for a great windbreaker & keeps mosquitoes off me. I can wear warm clothes underneath & this jacket over the top. The best part is I don’t have to bring a more expensive & heavy jacket backpacking. The jacket also stuffs into a tiny little sack, a plus. If it does get wet then hang it out to dry, it dries quickly.CONS: Not waterproof, but just buy a cheap waterproof poncho & you are set.NOTE: I have used this jacket on 2 backpacking trips already in the last 2 years & it still looks new. My sister borrowed it on her backpacking trip & wanted one herself.
DO not buy! The produt IS NOT “water resistant” and is very cheaply made. The tag is a gross misrepresentation of the product. Even when brand new it left me high and WET on the John Muir Trail in just a very light rain. We joked that it should be sold as a Hypotherima training jacket. Very serious about this…a $1 rain poncho would have been better. Note: Sierra Designs does not honor their warranties! I found this out after mailing it back to them (after instructed to do so because I was not near a REI at the time)….Thank God for REI THE PHOTO SAYS IT ALL!
Got this jacket from backcountry like, 3 years ago. Have not stopped using it.It was my light wind shirt when I climbed Kilimanjaro. It was my fall jacket biking around San Fran. And It’s currently my spring rain jacket biking around my home town. All around fantastic and light weight for on the trail or in the city. It does run a little small, i’m normally an XS and bought an XS, wish I had sized up to the S. The wrist elastic can be a little tight, but it’s nice when it’s windy.
I have only used this jacket once and it does the job. On a snowshoeing trip the wind picked up and it was cold so I threw this jacket on and warmed up quickly. The only downside is that if you get overly warm wearing it and sweat the sweat builds up in the jacket and when you take it off, your clothing is all wet from sweat and can be chilly. But other than that I was quite happy with the job it performed on blocking the wind and water.
